Error running install.php

After uploading the files and running install, I get the folowing message

Parse error: parse error, unexpected $ in /usr/local/psa/home/vhosts/lablinkstransport.org/httpdocs/database/include/general_functions.php on line 263

Error during database connection.


What is this and how would I correct it?

The first thing I would check, being that it's a connection error, is my set-up for logging into the database. Maybe a typo in the password, database name, or the host.
