I often work with database views to present a single select in different ways. Often the Grid view is optimized to use less space, so I come to create a symbolcolumn for Boolean fields - have a look here
While Booleanfields could not be really long, there are other situations where this could bem i have built a tree-structure, for linking i have built a recursive database function, which returns the path in different ways, short and long. Long version could be ten times wider than the short version.
In Grid-view I prefer short variant, in edit/detaillier the longer one - but the settings of the forms configuration were used for both :-(
Perhaps you could realize a optional different linked field in a future version.
